Professional Experience

2008-2016

After graduating with a B.A. in English and a minor in psychology, I took a job teaching at a private K-12 school. I was hired as a junior high English teacher in 2008, but also taught other subjects including: speech, science, Bible, drama, and study skills. After the high school English teacher resigned, I was asked to take over secondary English, and as the school grew, I took on my first leadership position, overseeing three other secondary English teachers. In 2012, I began my graduate work in English and was offered the position of Dean of Academics. With this new position, I oversaw all teaching faculty, managed the curriculum, evaluated transcripts and created graduation plans, interviewed all incoming students and assessed accommodation needs, managed on-line classes, proctored the PSAT, and created schedules. I also oversaw many fundraisers, the school’s chapter in the National Christian Honor’s Association, student government, and aided in the school’s accreditation renewal process. I mentored new teachers, led a workshop for a conference, and was the school coordinator of academics as well as the District Vice President for the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (T.A.P.P.S.), and completed my M.A. in English.

2018-Present

After taking two years off to be home with my daughter, a time for which I am forever grateful, I once again entered the classroom. In the fall of 2018, I was offered a pool lecturer position teaching English 1301 and 1302 at Sam Houston State University in the same department that shaped and inspired me years before. I also have taught English classes at Lone Star Community College as needed. Now, my former instructors have become trusted colleagues and mentors. During the spring semester of 2020, my decade of experience saw a new challenge: virtual classes. I quickly had to adapt and learn new ways of using technology to give my students the best possible instruction in an uncharted time. I attended several webinars and went on to take part in a summer cohort to gain my certification in online instruction. I also began graduate school once again, this time at LSU and focusing on Higher Education Administration. So much of what I have learned as a student, especially a recent online student, has helped me in managing the blended class format that I now teach. With many educational and professional experiences as my foundation, I hope to accept a full-time lecturer position at SHSU next year, and plan on pursuing my Ph.D. in either English literature or education (or both).
